Compact SUVs are a popular vehicle choice for many people. They combine the utility of a larger SUV with the car-like manners of a sedan, and this versatility is a major selling point for many buyers. Two of the top vehicles in this segment, the 2018 Subaru Forester and the 2018 Ford Edge, offer the best of both worlds, along with innovative technology and improved performance.

For drivers in Freehold, Englishtown, Manalapan and Marlboro, we've placed these two compact SUVs side by side, so you can compare all their key differences and decide which is the right choice for you.

2018 Subaru Forester Overview

The base engine for 2018 Subaru Forester is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that produces 170 horsepower. While this may be enough for most people, there's also a more powerful 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that significantly improves the Forester's acceleration and performance on steep grades. Lower trim levels use a six-speed manual transmission, while the higher trim levels use a continuously variable transmission with shift paddles and drive modes with the SI-Drive system.

Despite its utility, the Forester handles with surprising agility and composure. The steering is weighted well and offers plenty of confidence, while the high ground clearance and standard all-wheel drive provide additional safety in inclement weather or off-road environments.

Properly equipped, the Forester is rated for 1,500 pounds of towing in either configuration.

2018 Ford Edge Overview

The 2018 Ford Edge is equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 245 horsepower and a 3.5-liter V-6 that produces 280 horsepower. The Edge Sport offers a 2.7-liter V-6 that produces 315 horsepower, but that's the highest trim level.

Unlike the Subaru Forester, all-wheel drive is only standard for one trim, and all models use a six-speed automatic transmission. It handles well enough, but its transmission is inconsistent, and it doesn't offer the same maneuverability or all-weather capability.

2018 Subaru Forester Technology

The Forester offers exceptional value with its standard technology features. All models have Bluetooth connectivity, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, a rearview camera and a 6.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system.

Other Subaru technology features include a ten-way power-adjustable driver's seat, reclining rear seats, a 7-inch infotainment system and a panoramic power moonroof, as well as heated seating, heated mirrors, automatic climate control, a power liftgate, keyless ignition, an eight-speaker sound system and a heated steering wheel.

2018 Ford Edge Technology

The short list of standard technology for the Edge includes a small Sync 3 display, Bluetooth connectivity and one USB port. Some better features, such as an eight-speaker sound system and smartphone integration, are only available for higher trim levels or through options packages.
