How do you discern what's transmission trouble and what's not? Unless you're a certified mechanic, it might be a lot harder than you think. With the right information, though, even an amateur driver can spot the warning signs of a transmission problem. Below, we'll take a closer look at some common transmission problems, so drivers in the Englishtown, Manalapan, and Marlboro areas can tell when service is needed.Â
I Drive a Manual Transmission…
A manual transmission utilizes a driver-operating clutch to adjust the gears. The actuating cable within the manual transmission system can wear out over time, as can the clutch plates. If either of these integral components begins to deteriorate, it can cause major problems within the transmission. Most notably, a grinding or squealing with the gearbox when you attempt to change gears.Â
While grinding occurs when changing gears, another common transmission problem won't allow you to switch into gear at all. This happens when the wrong type of transmission fluid is used or when the transmission fluid level is extremely low. Check your fluid levels and top it off, if needed. Be sure to consult your owner's manual to make sure the proper transmission fluid is being used.
Occasionally, you'll be able to move the shift lever between gears, but doing so doesn't actually engage the gear box. This is sometimes because of a problem with the transmission fluid, but more often an issue with the shift cables and clutch linkage. Have a certified technician inspect the system and adjust the connections.Â
I Drive a CVT…
Without getting into the complicated nature of how a continuously variable transmission (CVT) works, it's important to understand that it operates similar to an automatic transmission system, but with some important differences. More often than not, CVTs will offer better fuel economy than manual or purely automatic transmission systems.
Nevertheless, even CVTs aren't free of occasional issues. Here are a few you might see:
·     Trouble shifting between gears
·     Excess noise coming from the engine at startup and under fast acceleration
·     Gear changes (both upward and downward) feel jerky
I Drive an Automatic Transmission…
Automatic transmissions can suffer many of the same issues as other transmission systems, including problems caused by low, leaking, or old transmission fluid. If your automatic transmission system is having trouble switching into gear, either with a delay or hesitation, or if it feels like it drops in, then this could be a sign that your fluid is old or low. Have the fluid inspected, and have the transmission system inspected for leaks.
