Proper routine maintenance on your vehicle is one of the best ways to ensure you and your passenger's safety, while also extending the life of your vehicle. Checking your tires for signs of wear and damage should be part of any preventative maintenance routine. The following are common warning signs of tire failure and red flags which may indicate the need to replace your tires.

Tread Wear

Some of the earliest and most common warning signs of tire failure can be see on the treads. Worn treads can be extremely dangerous, dramatically reducing the traction of your tires and the handling of your vehicle. Its recommended that tire treads are at least 1/16th of an inch deep, and more for driving in slick or wet conditions. Your tire's tread depth can easily be measured by a professional using a tread gauge to determine if your tires need replacement. You can test it yourself using a penny. Stick the penny in the tread of the tire. If all of Lincoln's head is visible on the coin, your tire treads have significant wear. Additionally, new tires are fitted with tread indicator bars that only become visible when a tire's treads are significantly worn and require replacement. If they are easily visible to the naked eye, it is time to consider replacing your tires.

Cracked Sidewalls

As tires begin to age, you may begin to notice cuts or cracking along the sidewalls. Small cracks and cuts often go unnoticed, or may not appear to be a serious problem. However, as these cracks and cuts grow and deepen they may be indicators of potentially dangerous tire failure. Cracks and cuts typically develop due to the presence of a leak, as they grow larger they may be a sign that your tire is near a blowout. If you find severely cracked sidewalls in your tires, consider replacing them immediately.

Bulging

In addition to problems with cracking and cutting, many worn and damaged tires display bulging and blistering along the sidewalls. Bulges and blisters are a sign of imminent tire failure and should be dealt with immediately. They typically form as the tire develops leaks and weak spots. If ignored, these bulges and blisters can lead to a serious a blowout.
