The leaves are falling off
the trees, pumpkins are showing up in stores, and that means it's time to start
thinking about what to for what is possibly one of the most fun holidays of the
entire year: Halloween. Whether you're looking for a fun, not-so-scary activity
to do with young children, something appropriate for a family with kids of
multiple ages, a bone-chilling night of horror for older teens, or something
where those 21 and older can enjoy a cocktail, Freehold has something for
everyone. Here are some of the top Halloween attractions in our area, presented
courtesy of Freehold Subaru.
Located a short 20 minute drive from Freehold, K&S Farm has something for the whole family. Attractions include "Sunshine Acres" daytime activities for younger visitors and scary stuff for the older set. Kid-friendly things to do include a child-sized hay bale maze, pumpkin picking, and hay rides. Older (or braver) celebrants will enjoy getting a thrill at the Killer Kornfield, Zombie Attack Haunted Hayride, and the Dementia 3D haunted house. Prices, hours and directions can be found on the farm's Halloween website Field of Terror.com. Most attractions are open through November 1st, though inclement weather may affect outdoor attractions.
The Freehold Halloween Spooktacular
You don't have to leave Freehold to have a great time this fall. The Freehold Halloween Spooktactular is a must-see. One of the best free events of the entire year, the Spooktactular features Jack-O-Lantern and costume contents, as well as a costume parade. Events are divided into age groups to give everyone a fair chance.
The Jack-O-Lantern contest takes place on Friday, October 25th between 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm in the parking lot of the Hall of Records on Main Street, Freehold (in the event of rain it will be moved to Freehold Borough Fire Department's Annex Building, located in the bus terminal parking lot, which is between Main and Broad Streets). Your pumpkin MUST be submitted by 7pm in order to be included in judging. Age groups are "5 and under", "6 through 9", "10-13," "14 through 17" and "18 and older."
Another popular event at the Spooktacular is the costume contest and parade. Costume judging takes place Sunday, October 26, 2014 from noon to 12:45pm at the Freehold Raceway parking lot off Manalapan Avenue. The parade begins at 1pm. Categories are "Infants to 2 years old", "3 through 5", "6 through 8", "9-12", "13 through adult" and (for your furry friends), "Pooch." You can find more information at the Spooktactular's official website or their facebook page.
For those who think Halloween should include a cocktail or two, there's the Freehold Pub Crawl, which takes place on Thursday, October 30th, 8:00pm to 10:00pm. Locations include the American Hotel, Frederici's, Court Jester's, and the Metropolitan Cafe. Freehold Subaru cares about your safety; make plans to get home by pre-booking a cab through one of Freehold's many quality Taxi cab companies, assigning a designated driver, or using public transportation.
